Want to visit your children or grandchildren in Canada?
You can apply for a Super Visa as visiting parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
The Super Visa is specially created for parents and grandparents, allowing you to visit and stay in Canada as temporary residents for up to 2 years without the need for any extensions.
It is a multiple entry visa that remains valid for up to 10 years and allows reentry within that period.
The Super Visa is different from a visitor visa in the amount of time it allows you to remain in Canada. A visitor visa is valid for a period of 6 months but if you wish to extend your stay, you are required to apply for a visitor visa extension.
Who Qualifies for a Super Visa?
The Super Visa is only applicable for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. You need to meet the following requirements to apply for a Super Visa:
- Visiting a permanent resident or Canadian citizen as their parent or grandparent
- Have an invitation letter signed by and from your child or grandchild that lists the following:
- Assurance of financial support for the duration of your stay
- The number of people living in the house
- Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent resident document
- Medical insurance valid for up to 1 year with a minimum coverage of $100,000 and proof that it is paid
The Super Visa is applied from outside of Canada. The child or grandchild must provide proof that minimum necessary income requirements are met.
What Else Do You Need to Know About the Super Visa?
Even if you are traveling from a visa-exempt country, it is recommended that you apply for a Super Visa. The Super Visa will allow you to remain in the country for a period of 2 years.
Note that, if you are traveling by air, then you would still require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) even after having a Super Visa.
If you want to extend your Super Visa, then you must apply for an extension 30 days before your current status expires. You will be allowed to remain in Canada under ‘implied status’ if your visa expires while your application is being processed.
Super Visa Processing Time
The processing times for a Super Visa depend on the country of residence of the parent or grandparent. This can range from within one week to several months.
Super Visa Refusal
These are some of the top reasons why a Super Visa may be refused:
- Insufficient travel insurance
- Financial insufficiency of the inviter
- Economic and political stability in the applicant’s home country
- Inability to satisfy the reviewing officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay
