Who Qualifies for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)?

You need to meet the following requirements to qualify for a PGWP:

• Be 18 years of age or older
• Complete a full-time study program that lasted at least 8 months
• Apply within 180 days of your graduation
• Have valid temporary residence status at the time of your application

If you do not have valid status at the time of application, then you must first apply for temporary residence status. However, if your study permit is valid, then you are eligible to work full-time until your application is approved.

What are the Requirements for the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)?

Your study program must meet the following requirements to make you eligible for the PGWP:

• Must be from a post-secondary school/college or a trade/technical university
• Must be from a private school that follows the same requirements as a public school
• Must be from a private or post-secondary institution in Quebec that provides programs for the duration of 900 hours or longer and leads to a diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP) or an attestation de spécialisation professionnelle (ASP)
• Must be from a private institution that is authorized by the province to grant degrees

The validity of the Post-Graduate Work Permit depends on the duration of your study program.

Am I allowed to extend my PGWP?

Yes, under certain circumstances you can extend your PGWP. If the duration of your permit is not provided at the time of application due to the expiry of your passport, then you can apply for an extension of the PGWP.

Can I apply for a work permit after PGWP?

No, you cannot apply for a work permit after PGWP. The PGWP is only allowed once and only offered to students who have graduated from designated learning institutions (DLIs).

Can I hold a skilled job with a PGWP?

Yes, you can hold a skilled job with a PGWP. PGWP is an open work permit, therefore, you are allowed to work anywhere and for any Canadian employer. However, there might be certain restrictions specific to your permit.

Does a distance learning program make one eligible for a PGWP?

No, a distance learning program does not make you eligible for a PGWP.

Does my PGWP remain valid if my passport expires?

No, PGWPs are valid only up to the expiration date of your passport.
