You are eligible to apply for a permanent resident card as a permanent resident of Canada. A permanent resident card (PR Card) is used as a certificate of identity while traveling.

A permanent resident card is used as proof of your permanent residency status when returning to Canada. A PR card is valid for a maximum period of 5 years.

If your PR card has expired, then you must apply for a new one before leaving Canada on your trip.

Who Can Apply for a Permanent Resident Card?

If you are a new permanent resident, then you will receive a PR card when your permanent residency application is complete.

You will need to apply for a PR card if:

  • You didn’t receive your PR card within 180 days of immigration
  • Your PR card will expire in 9 months or has already expired
  • Your PR card is lost, stolen, or damaged
  • You need to update your PR card if you legally change your name
What are the Requirements of a Permanent Resident Card?

If your PR card is about to expire, you will need to apply to the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to renew your PR card.

You will need to provide information about your travel history, updated address, and employment history for the last 5 years. This information is used to assess if you have met the Permanent Residency Obligations.

As a permanent resident, you are required to spend 730 days in the last 5 years in Canada. This is known as the residency obligation. If you do not meet these requirements, your permanent resident card will be refused.

If you do not meet the residency obligation, your permanent residency will also be revoked.

This decision can be appealed to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD). However, if your appeal is refused, then you will be issued a removal order.
