What are the Requirements for Different Visa Extensions?

Visa Extensions for Visitors: A visitor visa allows non-citizens to stay in Canada for a period of 6 months at a time. They are either single or multiple entry visas. However, at the end of 6 months, your legal status will expire, and you will be required to leave the country unless you apply for an extension at least 30 days before your current visa expires.

You will be allowed to stay in Canada if your current visa expires while your application is being processed.

Visa Extensions for Study Permit Holders: A study permit allows international students to stay in Canada for a period of time based on their study program and other factors.

Your study permit defines your work conditions, the period of stay, study course restrictions, etc. If you want to extend your study permit, then you must apply to the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

You may apply at least 30 days before your current permit expires. If you fail to do so, you have 90 days to apply for a restoration permit. If you want to change your course, institution, or the conditions on your study permit, it may not be enough to apply for just an extension.

Visa Extension for Work Permit Holders: Canada offers a host of work permits that have their own specified application process. However, if you want to apply for an extension or change any conditions on your work permit, then you will need to do so before your current permit expires.

You will be required to file for an extension 30 days before your work permit expiration date. You can not extend your work permit beyond the validity period of your passport.
